This presentation is intended to provide information on crisis survival skills that staff can help students employ in order to return to class when feeling intense emotions.

Keynote: Mindfulness: Mindful Tools & Strategies: Peter Franklin
Mindfulness is finding its way into most every facet of our lives…work, school, society…and for good reason. More and more we need tools and strategies to deal with stress, anxiety, and uncertainty. As we embrace these tools and strategies, we regain our happiness, better self-awareness, and the ability to cope. Peter Franklin, educator and Mindfulness coach will demystify Mindfulness and will arm you with Mindful tools and strategies.

BH1: Incorporating Mindfulness Into Your Personal and Professional Life: Peter Franklin
Now that you have a solid, working understanding of Mindfulness and its benefits, let’s now turn to making Mindfulness part of your (and your students) daily life! This workshop will focus on how to fully incorporate Mindfulness into your personal and professional life.
BH2: Energizers, Brain Breaks and Interactive Learning Structures: Lisa Gibbs
Lisa is a Responsive Classroom Certified Teacher and Presenter and will guide participants in engaging activities to use in the classroom or a small group setting to enhance the learning environment. Energizers, Brain Breaks and Interactive Learning Structures can be used in all academic and social learning curricula.
BH3: Beyond Smart Goals: Engaging Students in the Goal Setting Process: Stephen Brown
Goal setting is the number one mental skill to improve performance when done correctly. Participants will complete a multi-step personalized goal plan and learn the latest skills to engage, motivate, and support student aspirations. Strategies include if-then planning, mental contrasting, and making contact.
BH4: Family Engagement: Theresa Wiggins
Researchers are no longer asking whether family engagement matters; the fact that it plays a key role in student achievement has been well established. The question remains, what type of family engagement makes a difference? How can we, as schools, engage families in a meaningful way to improve student outcomes? Explore critical first steps in a family engagement plan and learn ways to tailor your engagement practices to meet the needs of your community.
BH5: Overview: Mental Health First Aide (MHFA) and Signs of Suicide (SOS) Programs: Kellianne Sweeney
During this session, participants will learn about the following two programs – Youth Mental Health First Aid and The SOS Signs of Suicide Prevention Program. Youth Mental Health First Aid is an 8 hour training offered by Wilmington Public Schools which includes what Youth Mental Health First Aid is, why it is important, and how to go about registering for the course. The SOS Signs of Suicide Prevention is a depression awareness and suicide prevention program geared towards middle school and high school age. Participants will learn about what the program includes, goals of the program and lessons included in the program. This session is aimed at introducing these programs and expanding enthusiasm for both which teaches adults how to help those struggling with mental health challenges and building awareness and prevention around depression and suicide in youth. This session will also include how the Wilmington school district has utilized the programs and how participants can bring them into their districts.
BH6: Navigating the Cyber World: Camila Barrera
This workshop reviews the challenges and dangerous situations that may arise through use of the Internet, social media and smart phones. It is important for parents to be aware of the popular apps, social media sites and programs used by youth online. This workshop explains the issues and possible consequences from cyber bullying, sexting and revealing identifying information to strangers.
BH7: Addressing Classroom Behavior Through Evidence-Based Practice: Jennifer Hilton
This break out session will address the functions of behavior and how to utilize an understanding of these functions to treat challenging behavior. Some general strategies for treating the common functions of behavior will be discussed, as well as procedures that can be utilized to determine the function of challenging behavior.
