With the increase of inclusive classrooms, ESL and ELA teachers must find ways to support students’ acquisition of English as well as mastery of ELA standards. Unfortunately, that can be challenging in many schools. This session provides resources and strategies to develop productive collaboration that benefits ELLs.
ESL2: Collaboration Between ELE and Special Ed Departments: Carla Pennachio
How do EL teachers communicate about student progress to colleagues in team meetings? What information is important for teams to know about an English learner? Explore these questions and hear about a project from Carla’s Job Alike group that aims to streamline communication and enhance collaboration. Participants will come away with a draft of their own student information sheet to share with colleagues in their districts.
ESL3: Exploring the Next Generation ESL Curriculum Collaboration Tool: Theophilia Afful
In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore the Collaboration Tool from the Next Generation ESL Project. This “multi-layered, multi-use resource” is invaluable for all content area teachers as they focus on promoting higher order thinking skills as well as academic language development..
ESL4: Collaboration with Parents and Families: Jennifer Fitzgerald
Collaborating with parents of English learners is a key ingredient to student success. In this workshop, participants will explore a variety of ways to increase parent and family involvement. They will come away with a list of short and long term strategies to implement that will engage families and lead to greater student achievement.
