Session 1: 8:30-10:00
OTPT1 – Assessing the Complex Student
This course is for occupational therapists who have a role in evaluating students. This course will cover the basics of a school based occupational therapy evaluation and what an occupational therapist brings to the IEP team. This course will discuss methods for assessing the most complex and involved students; participants will learn strategies to assess students whose abilities are not captured through traditional assessment methods.
OTPT2 Research Review of Motor Impairments in Autism & Implications for Treatment for School Based PTs
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a multi-system neurodevelopmental disorder which involves social, communication and behavioral challenges. The DSM-5 was updated in 2013 and is the standard reference for diagnosing autism which includes a social interaction and social communication domain and restricted interests and repetitive behaviors domain. Motor impairments are not included in the DSM-5 criteria for diagnosing ASD; however, there has been a recent increase in the amount of literature supporting motor impairments in children with ASD. This presentation will outline recent research on motor impairments on children with ASD and discuss the implications for treatment for the school based physical therapist.
OTPT3 A Discussion: The Effectiveness of the Consultation Model for Therapists and Educators
Participants will review the current research on the effective characteristics of the consultation process. They will utilize a Consultation Form along with a PLEP A or PLEP B and samples of student work to identify targeted skills and to create your own consultation model to use in your practice. Participants should bring 1 or 2 redacted samples of student work for this activity.
OTPT4 How to do a wicked good school based sensory processing evaluation in 30 minutes.
Practical methods for conducting a school based sensory processing evaluation will be presented. The workshop will focus on efficient evaluation tools and procedures, so that the sensory portion of an OT evaluation can be an accurate reflection of the student’s learning profile, given the time and budget constraints that school based occupational therapists face. Participants will learn how to efficiently collect information from the student’s family, teacher/classroom, and clinical observations. There will also be time allotted for collaboration of ideas that participants are using that have proven effective as well. Please feel free to bring and/or come prepared to discuss resources you are willing to share.
