Calling all critics! Melrose teachers have developed a draft of a culture standard and scoring indicator, and we need your help! Give us feedback on our rubric and it is yours to take with you. This workshop will explore the many ways you can bolster your French program and keep students enthused about learning the language. WL9 Community Circles in the World Language Program
Community Circles is a restorative practice from indigenous communities that fosters positive transformation by expanding our capacity to connect with each other and build dialogue. WL teachers with students from Novice High through Intermediate Mid who want to give voice to their students and create opportunities for them to learn from each others’ experiences are invited to participate and experience the power of a community circle. NOTE: The presentation will be in English.
WL10 Lively Activities for the Latin Classroom
Do you want to inspire your students? Come and learn games, activities, and assessments for reading and learning Latin. NOTE: The presentation will be in English and is designed for all levels.
WL11 Proficiency for Dummies
This workshop is for participants who are wondering “where do I even start?!” when considering the transition from a traditional language class to a proficiency based language class. We will give helpful tips from our own experiences that participants can put into action immediately! Our focus will be on activities that can be implemented right away in your classroom, from new activities to how to make old ones more proficiency based. Participants should have a basic understanding of what proficiency is but not yet tried it in their own classroom. NOTE: The presentation, identical to one delivered at NPEN 2017, will be in English with examples in French. It is designed for all levels. Participants should bring one of the following to the workshop: a unit outline, a textbook currently used during instruction, or unit-based curriculum document.

We will share a variety of ideas and projects for incorporating project based learning into your foreign language classroom. NOTE: The presentation will be in English with examples in Spanish. It is designed for all levels.
WL13 Student Digital Portfolios
Support personalized learning by building proficiency-based online student portfolios. Students can track their progress in all three modes (interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational) over the course of their language study. WL14 Teaching with Art in the World Language Classroom
Explore approaches for utilizing works of art from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston collection—and beyond—in your classroom. Try activities designed to build students’ language acquisition and understanding of world culture. Learn about MFA for Educators, an online tool for creating multimedia presentations and lessons. This interactive workshop will feature examples of artwork from across the globe and is relevant for teachers of all world languages. NOTE: The presentation will be in English and is designed for all levels.
WL15 Ways to Use Technology to Learn and Teach Foreign Language
A brief introduction of websites and apps that you can use with yourself and your students. Applications that will be discussed include: Duolingo, Quizlet, Memrise, Kahoot. Quizziz, Edpuzzle and others. NOTE: The presentation will be in English and is designed for all levels.

WL16 Diving Into Proficiency: Where to Begin?
The idea of switching your instruction to proficiency based can be daunting. It certainly was for me! In this workshop I will show you how I took the leap into instructing for proficiency. You will be given a template for a proficiency based unit design, and we will walk through the steps of designing that unit with an eye towards the three modes of communication. You will leave with the structure of your first proficiency based unit already prepared. NOTE: The presentation will be in English and is designed for all levels.
WL17 Get Students Talking: Using Authentic Ads and Commercials to Build Proficiency
We will explore activities that use print ads as well as commercials to build students’ proficiency. Teachers will leave with a variety of engaging activities that work with images and video clips to get students talking. Activities include: the storytelling string, I see/I think/I wonder, Ed Puzzle, hidden pictures, voice overs, 30 second look and more. NOTE: The presentation will be in English with examples (as well as authentic materials) in French. It is designed for High School and Middle School levels).
WL18 Project-Based Learning: Engaging Students
I have been running my classroom for the last 5 years as a project based environment where students build websites throughout the year, incorporating different pieces of writing, recordings, video projects, etc to not only demonstrate Spanish knowledge, but also to keep a digital “portfolio” of their own work through that year. Please join me on a thrilling introduction to Google Sites and how you can create projects, of any length, to get your students producing more in the target language, and engage in the grammar lessons to see why they would use certain grammar, and to tie culture into (nearly) every single class you teach. It’s a win-win-win! NOTE: The presentation will primarily be in Spanish.
WL19 Seal of Biliteracy
In this session I will give you an introduction to the Seal of Biliteracy National Movement and an overview of the Massachusetts Seal of Biliteracy Pilot Project. I will also update you on the Board of Education Regulations moving forward. Then ,I will show you how to access and use the Tool Kit created by the Language Opportunity Coalition. You will leave the session with everything you need to start implementation of the Seal of Biliteracy at your school. Music and music videos are powerful tools…the lyrics, the rhythms, and the images have the potential to evoke strong emotions and convey thought-provoking messages.
