11:45-12:45 The 100 Mile Club®
Kendra Stanton
Six years ago, I wanted to start a walking club that would appeal to students with varied athletic interests. I found the The 100 Mile Club®. It was founded by Kara Lubin in 1993. Kara was a teacher in California whose students struggled with learning and feeling successful. She recognized they felt uninspired and often times like a failure. Now The 100 Mile Club® is a non-profit organization that promotes an even playing field for everyone. It is about fitness and genuine personal success through setting a lofty goal and working toward it. During this workshop I will share about The 100 Mile Club®, how to start a club at your school – even mid-year, and some of my experiences and organizational tips.

11:45-12:45 If They Had Known
Dar Heikkinen
“If They Had Known” is a 35 minute documentary about an accidental death that shouldn’t have happened. Partying in high school and college is nothing new, but how kids party these days has changed. Kids now casually mix alcohol with commonly prescribed medications without any knowledge that they may be putting themselves at risk. This recreational trend is happening in high schools and on college campuses across the country and is resulting in accidental deaths. With this film and documentary program, we hope to educate every high school and college student across the country about the risks of mixing prescription drugs with alcohol and hopefully, save lives

Jeff Waldron

1:00-2:00 Navigation Games – Orienteering
Barb Bryant
Orienteering is a running and navigation sport in which competitors travel through terrain to visit checkpoints marked on a map. Orienteering is great for kids because it develops their physical abilities (speed, agility), mental abilities (map navigation, critical thinking), and provides an opportunity for outdoor play. Navigation Games is a non-profit that partners with schools to include orienteering in PE and STEM curricula, both in regular classes and as an intensive team-building adventure. We use games to teach safety, observation, route planning, map interpretation, and recovery from errors — and to keep kids engaged and moving. Our coaches also work with after-school teams, including the winners of the 2018 USA Interscholastic Orienteering Championships, Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School. In this session, we will demonstrate several of our orienteering activities and lesson plans, and talk about what’s possible in bringing applied map navigation into schools.
