This session will discuss the roles that self-awareness, conversational, self-advocacy, relationship/boundary and perspective taking skills play in the social success of students and a classroom’s climate. Various tips and tools will be presented, offering therapists ways to adapt activities based on the specific needs of their students, developing interactive lessons to keep students engaged and embrace flexibility during lessons.
8:30-10:00 A Collaborative Therapy Model: Music Therapy and Speech Therapy in the Special Education Setting

This session will present ways that Speech and Language Pathologists and Music Therapists combine efforts to target the needs of students and will include examples of planning, implementation, and data collection.
8:30-10:00 Neuroscience and Self-Regulation Techniques for Kids with Autism, ADHD, and Sensory Disorders

This session will include a background of the nervous system, learning knowledge relating to the neuroscience behind self-regulation, gaining strategies to help treat needs to individuals with ASD, SPD and ADHD, and learning cause and effect intervention techniques to address neurological signs.
8:30-10:00 A Sensory Integration Informed Approach to Pediatric Speech and Language Therapy

This session will outline the senses that we use to interpret, understand and function within our environment as well as describe at least three types of sensory challenges that interfere with communication. Participants will learn at least four sensory strategies to support language and communication in children.
8:30-10:00 Key Special Education Regulations and Related Topics for SLPs

This session will cover key regulations that all special education personnel are bound to follow including parent/caregiver rights and district responsibilities. Other important topics will include errors that can put districts on the road to a BSEA hearing, appropriate communications, progress monitoring for IEP development, and changes in student demographics.

This session will include defining and learning about reading assessments used in the classroom to better understand and analyze students’ full reading profile, balanced literacy in a classroom, different reading programs used to address balanced literacy, normal phonemic awareness and literacy acquisition, and the literacy coach/reading specialist role and how it may overlap with SLP’s role.
